Day 1: Milan
Your tour commences this evening in Milan. Dinner tonight is included in a local restaurant but first enjoy a welcome drink. This is an ideal opportunity to meet your fellow travellers.
Day 2: Aosta and Megève in the French Alps
Driving west, our first stop is in the foothills of the Italian Alps in the historic town of Aosta. Capital of the Valle d’Aosta region, you will find cafes and shops sitting next to Roman ruins and a romanesque cloister and frescoed chapel. Passing the ski resort of Courmayeur, we take the Mont Blanc Tunnel under Europe’s highest mountains, to enter the French Alps near Chamonix. Continuing deep into the heart of the Haute Savoie region of the mighty French Alps we reach the chic ski resort of Megève. Surrounded by a dozen world class ski resorts, and the enormous mountains of the Mont Blanc massif, Megève’s chalets and ancient rustic buildings date back as far as the 1300’s. Designer boutiques, restaurants and après ski bars makes this the perfect base to stay the next three exciting nights.
Day 3: Ice curling, sleigh ride and winter walks
To start the day we have included a game of Ice Curling. A local instructor will teach us the rules and then a game…. Watching will be as amusing as playing! The highlight of today will be a ride on a horse drawn carriage through the delightful old town and local countryside. The rest of the day and evening is completely at leisure. From Megève you have access to all the main peaks by cable cars and chair lifts. All over the mountains are large restaurants, cafés and rest facilities, all with spectacular views over the mighty French Alps. You can try your hand at winter sports or maybe take a winter walk. A famous walk called the Calvary of Megève starts from near the ice skating rink. There are a series of 14 chapels along the way representing the Passion of Christ – the Way of the Cross. Otherwise simply relax, shop and explore Megève, one of the prettiest ski resort towns you will ever see.
Day 4: Chamonix, the Needle of Midday and Red Train
Today we visit the world famous resort of Chamonix. On arrival we enjoy an incredible mountain cable ride up to Aiguille du Midi, which translated means the ‘Needle of Midday’. At an altitude of 3,842 metres (11,621ft) you are seemingly within reach of Mont Blanc and the views across the French, Italian and Swiss Alps are astounding. At the top you will also find a café restaurant, mountaineering and alpine exhibition, plus a stomach clenching, glass bottomed observation platform! Your afternoon is at leisure in Chamonix town. Time to stroll amongst the cafés, restaurants, shops and boutiques set under the shadow of the Mont Blanc massif. For those who want ‘more mountain, less shopping’ we have also included a ticket on the historic ‘Red Train’ which winds its way up through the forests and valleys to Montenvers station. From the café terrace you have spectacular views up onto some of Chamonix’s highest and most dramatic peaks and down onto the largest glacier in France, the spectacular Mer du Glace – ‘Sea of Ice’. For the more energetic, your ticket also includes the cable car down to the top of the 430 steel steps that lead to the glacier. Here you can enter the labyrinth of a man-made ice grotto, complete with ice sculptures, a throne room and beautifully illuminated, carved tunnels.
Day 5: Annecy, Geneva and Montreux on the Swiss Riviera
This morning we visit the pretty lakeside town of Annecy. Here, cobblestoned streets, half-timbered and beautifully painted houses sit beside picturesque canals which are criss-crossed with stone bridges. With its Château d’Annecy, once castle home to the Counts of Geneva, and a back drop of mountains and the turquoise lake, the Vieille Ville (Old Town) is incredibly pretty. Next stop - Geneva. You will have time at leisure to explore Switzerland’s second largest city and once home of the Red Cross. Make sure you take a walk along the beautiful foreshore of Lake Leman (Lake Geneva) to see the city’s symbolic 140 metre high Jet d’Eau fountain which is set offshore in the lake. Later we continue to Montreux, on the exclusive Swiss Riviera where we will stay the next three nights.
Day 6: Chateau Chillon and ‘My Time’ in Montreux
This morning we have included entrance and a guided tour through the beautifully preserved Chateau Chillon. Made famous in Byron’s poem ‘The Prisoner of Chillon’, this 13th century fortress juts out imposingly into Lake Geneva. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore this grand lakeside city.
Day 7: Charlie Chaplin’s Vevey and Gruyères
After a leisurely start, our first stop today will be in Charlie Chaplin’s hometown of Vevey. Make sure you visit the lakeside promenade to see the statue of the ‘little man with baggy pants’. We also visit Chaplin World, a museum dedicated to Charlie Chaplin - the legendary artist and man, that retraces the extraordinary life of this cinematographic genius. Lunchtime will be at leisure in the unique village of Gruyères. Rising out of the flat valley floor, Gruyères village and castle are perched on top of a steep rocky hill. The broad cobblestoned main street, flanked by centuries old houses, is an astounding time capsule and one of the great sights of Europe. Returning to Montreux the rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 8: Golden Pass panoramic train and Grindelwald
An adventure today as we board the Golden Pass panoramic train which will take us across the Alps, past the chic ski resort of Gstaad and Château-d’Oex, to Zwiesimmen. Our seats are pre-booked in the special panoramic carriages and the views throughout the journey are spectacular. (Your luggage will travel separately, making this an easy and relaxing day). At Zwiesimmen, we change trains and continue to Interlaken, and then deep into the heart of the Bernese Oberland to Grindelwald where we stay the next three nights. Grindelwald is known the world over for its dramatic setting surrounded by massive snow covered peaks and the views directly onto the north face of the Eiger are exceptional. Justifiably famous for its skiing, the village is full of restaurants, cafés and shops. Throughout your stay we have included buffet breakfasts and four course dinners.
Day 9: ‘My Time’ for playing in the Bernese Oberland
Today you are free to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery which surrounds you. Perhaps try your hand at a winter sport or take a trip up one of the mountains? Lunch in a mountain restaurant tastes particularly good after a walk in the snow. One absolute ‘must do’ is to catch the train from Grindelwald via Kleine Scheidegg up to the Jungfraujoch – the highest rail station in Europe. At 3,454 metres (11,332 ft) the views are magnificent. You will find several restaurants, an Ice Palace and the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven display. You can also take a lift another 100 metres higher to the dramatic Sphinx lookout point.
Day 10: Lake Cruise – Thun to Interlaken
Following an enjoyable train ride along the lakeside of Thunersee, we spend time exploring the old town of historic Thun. Later we board a boat for a relaxing cruise down the length of Lake Thunersee to Interlaken. Nestled between two lakes, and surrounded by soaring peaks, Interlaken is an ideal spot for shopping and an afternoon stroll.
Day 11: Central Bahn panoramic train to Luzern
This morning we take the train along the shores of picturesque Lake Brienz and on to Luzern, with its covered wooden bridges (again, no hassles with your luggage as it will travel separately and be delivered to your hotel). Arriving around midday, we will enjoy a guided walking tour exploring this charming lakeside town. Your afternoon is at leisure and this evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner.
Day 12: Luzern
This morning it is time to say farewell as your tour ends.
