Christmas Touring with Albatross: A Swiss Spa Experience
Twinkling lights, unique traditions, and Christmas markets; a Christmas spent in Europe is a truly magical experience. In 2014, my mother and I embarked on the Christmas in a Swiss Spa Resort Tour with Albatross Tours and enjoyed every moment the trip had to offer.
Something for Everyone
If you’ve always dreamed of a wintery, European Christmas rugged up in layers of beanies and scarves, then this is the perfect tour for you. The 11-day adventure leaves from Munich, passes through the beautiful Austrian Lakes District and lands in Luzern (also known as Lucerne) for the ultimate Christmas holiday experience. The tour is a true showcase of some of Europe’s best cultural experiences. We visited special Christmas markets held in wooden stalls, visited the Silent Night chapel (where the carol was first performed) and explored Germany’s southernmost medieval town of Lindau. Everyone enjoyed the relaxed but organised schedule for each day. We were able to wander the cobblestone streets and markets at our leisure and find a café for a hot cup of coffee when we needed a break from the cold.
The White Christmas Experience
Before leaving, it was obvious the weather would be cold and there would be lots of snow falling – but to see and play in it was something completely different. The amount of snowfall during our trip was unexpected; our group enjoyed making snow angels and even had an impromptu snow fight while walking home from dinner!
At the Lindner Hotel and Alpentherme, we were able to swim in a heated outdoor pool with snow falling all around; this was a very memorable and unusual experience. We stayed in the Lindner Hotel for four nights and had the chance to explore the hotel’s remarkable underground walkways and selection of alpine baths.
Views You Won’t Forget
As an extra on our tour, we bought a ticket on the Gornergrat Rack Railway to the top of the Pennine Alps. The views were breathtaking. The railway trip allowed us to view some of Switzerland’s most treasured Alps from all angles, including the Matterhorn, Weisshorn and Monte Rosa. While this trip is at the pricier end of the scale, it certainly produced a Kodak moment that was worth the expense.
An Adventure for Young and Old
One of the great things about this tour was that it really was an all-ages adventure. Being in my late 20s and travelling with my mother (who is in her mid-50s), we were joined by travellers of all ages, including children. Having such a diverse array of fellow travellers made for an interesting trip and we all particularly enjoyed watching the kids on the tour get into the Christmas spirit.
If you’re wanting that quintessential, wintery Christmas experience but don’t know where to start, I highly recommend booking the Christmas in a Swiss Spa Resort Tour for 2015. You will have a very special experience with memories to last you a lifetime.
