Day 1: 24 January - Munich
Your tour commences this evening in cosmopolitan Munich. Dinner tonight is included in your hotel, but first enjoy a welcome drink. This is an ideal opportunity to meet your fellow travellers.
Day 2: 25 January - Salzburg
Crossing into Austria we enter the Austrian Lakes District and follow the beautiful shores of Lake Fuschl and Lake Wolfgangsee to reach the delightful village of St Wolfgang. Here we have time at leisure to explore and discover a lakeside lunchtime café. Later we continue to visit Mondsee on Lake Mondsee and enjoy a visit to the church made famous in the wedding scene of the film ‘The Sound of Music’. Our home for the next three nights is in one of Europe’s truly great cities, Salzburg.
Day 3: 26 January - Salzburg
A full day exploring Salzburg – the baroque city of Mozart sitting beneath its enormous Festung (Fortress)! First we enjoy a walking tour with an expert local guide who will introduce you to this enchanting city, including several locations used in the film ‘The Sound of Music’. As a finale you will gather amongst the fir trees in the small stone courtyard of the St Peter’s Keller, dating back to the 1500’s and Salzburg’s oldest restaurant, for a hot drink and biscuits. The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy this remarkable city. Maybe take time to visit the huge castle which is fascinating, or simply savour the atmosphere of the timeless squares and cobbled stone streets.
Day 4: 27 January - Salzburg
Driving south, we stop at the ski resort of Filzmoos where we board a horse drawn carriage to enjoy a ride through this winter wonderland. Passing through the snowy woods, and surrounded by majestic mountains, we reach the remote Oberhofalm alpine hut which provides a perfect lunchtime stop.
Day 5: 28 January - Klosters
A leisurely day as we follow the spectacular Inn Valley across the Tyrol to spend the morning in the Winter Olympic resort of Innsbruck. You will have plenty of time to explore the old town with its famous ‘Golden Roof’. Later we continue into Switzerland. Driving deep into the mountains of the Graubünden region, we arrive in the famous ski resort town of Klosters, where we stay two nights.
Day 6: 29 January - Klosters
Your day has been left at leisure to relax and savour the remarkable atmosphere of this excellent ski resort. A favourite haunt of Prince Charles, the old centre of Klosters is unique in that it remains an unspoilt, traditional Graubünden village surrounded by a bustling mountain resort. Perhaps take it easy in the old town, maybe go for a winter walk, or take a lift up to one of the many mountain restaurants.
Day 7: 30 January - Zermatt
At nearby Chur we board a panoramic carriage on the famous Glacier Express train which takes us over ravines and gorges, and along the ‘Valais’ through Switzerland’s finest mountain scenery, to the world-famous alpine resort of Zermatt. Set at an altitude of 5,315 ft, the village is surrounded by dozens of huge Alpine peaks and dominating all is the mighty Matterhorn. Petrol-driven vehicles are banned from the village and as such the peace and quiet enhances the wooden chalets and small winding village streets. Stunning! We stay here the next four magical nights.
Day 8: 31 January - Zermatt
This morning a local guide will join us for a walking tour of this fascinating mountain retreat, from its modern chic apartments and hotels to the little winding streets still lined with traditional stone and slate hamlets and cottages. The rest of the day is free to relax in the crisp clean air. Perhaps explore the town or go for a walk on the 70 kilometres of winter trails along the valley.
Day 9: 1 February - Zermatt
Today we have included a ride on the Gornergrat funicular train (cog railway) up to the highest open air railway station in Europe – the Gornergrat. At 3,100 metres (10,170 feet) the view from the top across the Alps is beyond belief. We have also included a cup of warming mulled wine on the terrace of the Kulmhotel restaurant, surrounded by one of the great vistas of the world – the mighty Matterhorn and the 28 other 4,000 metre high peaks that surround you.
Day 10: 2 February - Zermatt
What a magnificent location to relax and do as much, or as little, as you want! Whether you are a ‘super active snow sports’ person or a ‘take it easy and relax’ person there are numerous activities you can enjoy, and your Tour Manager will be at hand to assist and advise you. You will be in the heart of the Matterhorn glacier paradise and the whole valley and mountainside is alive with activity. There are numerous cable cars and lifts that can whisk you up the mountains. At virtually all ‘drop off’ points there are restaurants, cafés and observation points – usually with extraordinary panoramic views spanning the jagged Alps. Perhaps take a cable car up to the Klein Matterhorn. At 3,883 metres, it is the highest cable car station in Europe. From here you can clearly see Europe’s highest mountain Mont Blanc (4,810 metres) which is in France, and the summit of the Gran Paradiso in Italy. Alternatively, catch a lift to Rotenboden and visit the igloo village where you can enjoy a Swiss cheese fondue or a ‘white igloo mulled wine’ in the ice bar. The toboggan ride down to Zermatt also starts from here!
Day 11: 3 February - Milan
Entering Italy, we catch glimpses of Lake Maggiore before entering the lowlands and the stylish city of Milan. On arrival we enjoy a guided panoramic tour followed by time at leisure amongst the fashion shops of the luxurious Golden Triangle and in the square beside the giant Duomo. This evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner in a local Milanese restaurant.
Day 12: 4 February - Milan
This morning it is time to say farewell as your tour ends.
