Sardinia & Corsica, the Lands of Myths & Legends

14 Remarkable Days | Cagliari, Sardinia to Bastia, Corsica

Two islands, so different, so intriguing. One Italian, one French, both fiercely independent.

Ancient Sardinia, with its huge stone ‘Nuraghe’ Tower villages, as old as the Pyramids, which litter the inland landscape – a landscape which contrasts so dramatically with the azure waters of the Costa Smeralda archipelago bristling with modern mega yachts and designer stores. In the south Cagliari exudes the glorious rich emotions of Naples or Sicily, whilst in the north, Alghero faces towards Spain and their language is actually Catalan! But the island’s soul lies in the wild hills of the Gennargentu Mountains where we stay in remarkable Su Gologone, near the intriguing ‘bandit’ town of Orgosolo. Here we take 4WDs in the rugged ravines, where wolves still roam, for a shepherd’s picnic lunch.

In Corsica, we stay next to the mega yachts right in the heart of the marina port, beneath Bonifacio's awesome cliff top citadel, Napoleon’s historical birth town of Ajaccio, and the pretty port town of Calvi with its myriad of al fresco restaurants and shops. We take stunning coastal drives; relax over lunch in the citadel of Sartène, and in the ancient capital of Corte wedged between 2 inhospitable mountain ranges, multi-coloured Bosa, and the distinctly French port of L’ile Rouse. In Sardinia we take delightful cruises to the exquisite Neptune’s Caves, and out into the glorious Costa Smeralda, and from Calvi, along the Corsican cliffs to the dramatic UNESCO listed Scandola Nature Reserve.
