When to Visit Iceland

Iceland's climate can be unpredictable, and it can be expected to snow for many months of the year. So, if you’re looking to avoid this, the best time to visit is during the summer months of June, July and August. During this period, the weather is milder, and you can enjoy the stunning scenery without worrying so much about the cold. However, if you enjoy the snow, and want to witness the amazing northern lights, the best times to visit are between September and March.

Helpful Hints

Here are some important details that you should know before you go:

  • Language - The official language of Iceland is Icelandic, but you’ll be able to get by speaking English, which almost every Icelander speaks fluently.
  • Money - Iceland uses the Icelandic króna (kr) as its currency, and almost everywhere will accept credit or debit cards. The króna is divided into 100 aurar, however, not since 2003 have any coins less than one króna been in circulation. Therefore, Icelandic coins come in 1, 5, 50, and 100 kronor (plural of króna). Króna also comes in bank notes of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000.
  • Electricity - You'll need a standard Europlug also known as a type F plug to use Iceland’s electrical outlets.
  • Time zone and daylight - Icelands operates on Greenwich Mean Time all year round. In winter, Iceland will only receive between four or five hours of good daylight a day, so it's important to take advantage of these.
