North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a mountainous, lake-dotted country where ancient monasteries, Ottoman-era bazaars, and lively café culture meet dramatic canyons and alpine trails. Skopje’s statues and Old Bazaar, the serene shores of Lake Ohrid, and the cliffs of Matka Canyon show just how varied this small nation can be.

At the historic crossroads of the Balkans, you will find layered traditions, warm hospitality, and a thriving food scene. Spring and autumn reward travellers with clear days for hiking and sightseeing, while summer brings festivals and long, lazy evenings by the water.

Touring North Macedonia by Coach

Our small-group escorted format is ideal here. Coach days link Skopje, Ohrid, and remote villages, while short boat rides and gentle walks unlock canyons, monasteries, and lake viewpoints. Expect expert local guides and an easy balance of included visits and free time.

Best Time to Visit North Macedonia

The best seasons are spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) for mild temperatures and clear hiking conditions. Summer is warm to hot, great for lakes and evening strolls. Winters are cold, with snow in higher regions.

  • Summer (July to August): Long sunny days, busiest period in Ohrid and Skopje.
  • Winter (December to March): Colder weather; mountain areas see snow and some rural routes can be slower.

Things to Know Before You Go

Here are some important details that you should know before you go:

  • Language: Macedonian is the official language; Albanian has co-official status, and English is common in tourist areas.
  • Currency: Macedonian denar (MKD). Cards are accepted in cities; carry cash for small purchases in villages.
  • Time Zone: Central European Time (CET), with daylight saving to CEST from late March to late October.
  • Electricity: 230V, 50Hz. Sockets are mainly Type F; Type C/F plugs work with compatibility. A simple European adapter is usually sufficient.
  • Clothing: Monasteries and churches require modest dress. Both men and women should cover shoulders and wear long trousers or skirts; a scarf or shawl is useful. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for historic towns and trails.
